AI Applications for Small Business: How AI Is Changing the Workplace

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer just a futuristic concept or a luxury reserved for large corporations. Today, AI is actively transforming how small businesses operate, compete, and grow. We spoke with several industry leaders who shared valuable insights into how AI is being adopted across various small business functions—and how it’s revolutionizing the workplace.

1. Automating Repetitive Tasks

One of the most immediate benefits of AI for small businesses is the automation of time-consuming tasks. From scheduling meetings to responding to customer emails through AI-powered chatbots, companies are freeing up employee time and reducing operational costs.

“AI has enabled us to automate invoicing and customer queries. This has saved our team over 20 hours a week,” says Rohan Mehta, founder of a growing digital agency.

2. Enhancing Customer Service

AI-powered chatbots, sentiment analysis tools, and predictive analytics are helping small businesses provide faster, personalized service. This improves customer satisfaction while reducing the need for large customer support teams.

“We implemented an AI chatbot on our e-commerce site, and our customer response time dropped from hours to seconds,” says Priya Sharma, co-owner of a fashion brand.

3. Smarter Marketing with AI

From AI-driven content generation to targeted advertising and campaign optimization, small businesses are now leveraging AI to compete with much larger players in the marketing space.

“Our AI-based marketing tools analyze customer behavior and suggest the best time and platform to run campaigns. It’s been a game-changer for our ROI,” notes Ankit Kapoor, a marketing consultant for SMBs.

4. Data-Driven Decision Making

AI enables even small teams to make smarter decisions by analyzing large sets of data quickly and offering actionable insights.

“We used AI to study our customer churn patterns and adjusted our service offerings accordingly. It helped improve retention by 15%,” shares Neha Joshi, a SaaS startup founder.

5. Talent and HR Management

From scanning resumes to predicting employee turnover, AI tools are helping small businesses streamline recruitment and improve employee engagement.

“Our HR software uses AI to flag potential resignations and helps us proactively engage employees,” says Amit Verma, HR head at a 50-person IT firm.

Conclusion

AI is leveling the playing field for small businesses, empowering them with tools that were once only accessible to enterprise giants. Whether it’s through automation, enhanced customer service, smarter marketing, or better decision-making, AI is fundamentally changing the way small businesses work—and thrive.

Introduction

India is home to over 3 million Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) working across areas like education, health, poverty alleviation, environmental protection, and women empowerment. If you’re passionate about social change and want to start your own NGO, the good news is—India has a well-defined legal framework to help you do that.

This article provides a complete step-by-step guide on how to start and run a successful NGO in India.

Step 1: Define Your Mission and Vision

Before you start any formal process, clarify the following:

  • Cause or Issue: What social problem do you want to address?

  • Target Beneficiaries: Who are the people or communities your NGO will serve?

  • Objectives: What do you want to achieve in the short-term and long-term?

  • Vision & Mission Statement: Your vision defines your dream, while the mission outlines how you plan to achieve it.

Step 2: Choose the Legal Structure

In India, NGOs can be registered under one of the following legal frameworks:

1. Trust (Indian Trusts Act, 1882)

Step 8: Build a Team and Set up Office

  • Recruit staff or volunteers based on your program needs.

  • Set up a basic office space (rented or home-based).

  • Use online tools for collaboration and documentation.

Step 9: Create Awareness and Network

  • Design a logo and brand identity for your NGO.

  • Launch a professional website and be active on social media.

  • Network with other NGOs, government bodies, and CSR departments.

Step 10: Fundraising and Project Planning

Ways to Raise Funds:

  • Individual donations

  • Crowdfunding platforms

  • Corporate CSR funding

  • Government and international grants

  • Fundraising events

Prepare:

  • Detailed project proposals

  • Impact reports

  • Transparent accounting practices

Step 11: Monitor, Evaluate, and Report

  • Ensure all donations are duly receipted and accounted for.

Conclusion

Starting an NGO in India requires commitment, legal clarity, and a passion for creating change. With proper planning, registration, and team building, you can launch an impactful organization that transforms lives and communities. Remember—transparency, sustainability, and accountability are the cornerstones of every successful NGO.

Infosys Terminates 195 More Trainees in Latest Round of Layoffs in 2025

Infosys, one of India’s largest IT services firms, has terminated another batch of trainees as part of its ongoing internal performance reviews. In the fourth round of trainee exits this year, 195 freshers were released from the company’s Mysuru training campus on April 29 after failing to meet internal assessment benchmarks. According to reports, the evaluation was administered to a batch of 680 candidates.

With this development, Infosys has let go of nearly 800 trainees in 2025 alone. The timeline of trainee terminations includes:

  • Over 300 exits in February

  • 30–35 dismissals in March

  • 240 trainees released on April 18

  • 195 terminations on April 29

Reskilling and Support Initiatives Post-Layoff

Amid growing scrutiny over its handling of freshers, Infosys has introduced upskilling and support measures for affected candidates. Partnering with NIIT and UpGrad, the company is offering reskilling programs tailored to both IT and BPM (Business Process Management) roles.

  • BPM Training (via UpGrad): A 12-week program for those willing to shift into BPM roles. Infosys is covering the full cost.

  • IT-Focused Courses (via NIIT): Available to those interested in continuing in technology.

  • Ex-gratia Payout: One month’s compensation is being extended to terminated trainees, along with official relieving letters.

For those not opting for the BPM route, transportation from Mysuru to Bengaluru, travel allowance to return home, and temporary accommodation at the Mysuru Employee Care Centre are being arranged.

Reports suggest that around 250 trainees have enrolled in the new training programs, and 150 have signed up for outplacement assistance.

Context Behind the Layoffs

The workforce reduction comes as Infosys navigates a challenging business environment, with forecasted revenue growth for FY25 ranging between 0–3%. Demand from key markets remains tepid, prompting the company to streamline costs and maintain productivity standards.

Addressing the layoffs during a post-earnings press briefing, CEO Salil Parekh reaffirmed the company’s long-standing assessment methodology:

“We have a rigorous way to test individuals, and that process has remained unchanged for over 20 years.”

Company Outlook and Hiring Plans

Despite the current downsizing, Infosys added 199 employees in Q4, ending FY25 with a total headcount of 323,578, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 6,388 employees.

The attrition rate increased slightly to 14.1% compared to 13.7% in the previous quarter, amid rising competition, particularly from Global Capability Centers (GCCs). CFO Jayesh Sanghrajka acknowledged the competitive environment but assured stakeholders of Infosys’ ongoing recruitment plans.

Looking ahead, Infosys intends to hire over 20,000 freshers in FY26, and salary hikes have already been implemented in January and April this year.

Why ‘Made in America’ iPhones Remain a Distant Reality for Apple

In 2011, during a private dinner with Silicon Valley leaders, then-President Barack Obama posed a direct question to Steve Jobs: “What would it take to make iPhones in the United States?” Jobs’ blunt reply—“Those jobs aren’t coming back”—resonated deeply, symbolizing the broader shift in global manufacturing dynamics.

Fast forward to 2025, and the debate over bringing iPhone production to the U.S. has once again taken center stage, albeit with a different tone. Former President Donald Trump, known for his aggressive trade policies, is pushing the idea not with quiet diplomacy but with triple-digit tariff threats and viral posts on Truth Social.

Just days after slapping massive tariffs on Chinese imports—the country from where Apple sources the majority of its components—Trump claimed, “This is a GREAT time to move your COMPANY into the United States of America, like Apple, and so many others, in record numbers, are doing.”

Trump was referencing Apple’s $500 billion investment to expand its presence across the United States. However, a closer look at Apple’s 2024 global supplier list tells a different story. As per Nikkei Asia, 187 companies make up 98% of Apple’s procurement spending—and 84% of those suppliers still have a strong footprint in China, a figure that has increased since 2023.

Why Apple’s Supply Chain Still Revolves Around China

Since Trump’s initial trade war with China during his first term, Apple has tried to reduce its dependency on the Chinese supply chain. But the shift has proven far more complex than anticipated.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, explained this complexity back in 2017. Speaking at the Fortune Global Forum, he dismantled the notion that China’s primary advantage was cheap labor. Instead, he emphasized China’s unmatched skill concentration:

“China stopped being the low labor cost country years ago. What sets it apart is the depth and quantity of highly skilled workers, especially in tooling. In the U.S., we’d struggle to fill a room with tooling engineers. In China, we could fill multiple football fields.”

Experts agree. Pankaj Prasad, CEO of U.S.-based tech firm Airwave, highlighted how China’s long-term infrastructure investments—roads, ports, power, factories, and millions of trained workers—have made it nearly irreplaceable.

“You get land, labor, logistics, and suppliers—all in one integrated ecosystem. That’s extremely difficult to replicate.”

Apple’s Manufacturing Footprint in the U.S.

Despite the challenges, Apple hasn’t ignored domestic manufacturing entirely. The company began assembling its Mac Pro in Austin, Texas, back in 2013 and later upgraded the facility in 2019.

In 2017, following public pressure from Trump, Apple launched a $5 billion Advanced Manufacturing Fund, aimed at bolstering innovation and job creation in the U.S. The fund supported companies like Corning (for iPhone glass) and Finisar (for Face ID components). Apple claims the fund has since doubled to $10 billion, with a growing footprint across 20 U.S. states supporting data centers, suppliers, Apple TV+ production hubs, and more.

Further developments include:

  • A 250,000 sq. ft. AI server facility under construction in Houston.

  • The Apple Manufacturing Academy in Detroit to train U.S. workers in advanced manufacturing.

However, even with these efforts, Apple remains heavily reliant on Foxconn, its Taiwanese manufacturing partner, which runs the world’s largest iPhone factory in Zhengzhou, China, employing over 200,000 workers.

The Labor Cost Dilemma

While Tim Cook argued against labor cost being a deciding factor, numbers suggest otherwise. According to the Reshoring Institute:

  • A U.S. production worker earns approx. $32,000/year

  • In China: $13,000/year

  • In Vietnam: $7,000/year

  • In India: $2,000/year

Estimates suggest that assembling an iPhone in China costs about $30 in labor, while in the U.S., that cost could spike to $300.

Cassandra Cummings (Gluyas), CEO of Thomas Instrumentation, a U.S.-based electronics firm, points out:

“In the U.S., we must offer fair wages, paid leave, healthcare, and retirement plans. In China, such benefits are not mandatory, making labor significantly cheaper.”

This cost disparity has driven many U.S. electronics firms to follow Apple’s lead in outsourcing manufacturing to China and other low-cost countries.

A Historical Shift: From California to China

Apple once proudly manufactured products in the U.S.—starting with its Macintosh in Fremont (1983) and iMacs in Elk Grove, California in 2002. But by 2004, facing financial strain and the need for efficient production, Apple shifted most manufacturing abroad, spearheaded by Tim Cook.

Cummings (Gluyas) notes that the exodus wasn’t just about cost. Strict U.S. regulations on safety, waste disposal, and industry certifications (like ISO 9001, IPC-A-610) made domestic manufacturing increasingly burdensome and expensive.

Can Tariffs Alone Bring Manufacturing Back?

According to the International Trade Centre, from 2015 to 2024:

  • U.S. electronics exports rose from $170B to $214B (26% growth)

  • China’s electronics exports jumped from $60B to $928B—a staggering 1,446% increase

Currently, China controls 25% of global electronics exports. The U.S. lags far behind at 5.9%, ranking fourth globally after Hong Kong and Taiwan.

To bridge this gap, Trump proposed raising tariffs on all Chinese goods by up to 245%. But on April 11, key sectors—including phones, semiconductors, and computers—were exempted.

In a follow-up statement on April 14, Trump said,

“I speak to Tim Cook. I helped Tim Cook recently. I don’t want to hurt anyone—but the end goal is greatness for our country.”

He had offered a similar exemption to Apple back in 2020 after direct talks with Cook.

Incentives, Not Tariffs, May Hold the Answer

Most experts argue that tariffs alone cannot build domestic manufacturing—they only raise costs for businesses and consumers.

Prasad of Airwave summed it up:

“Tariffs shift pain, they don’t solve the problem. You need strong incentives to make domestic manufacturing viable.”

This was the approach of President Joe Biden, whose administration passed the CHIPS and Science Act in 2022—a $52.7 billion initiative to boost U.S. semiconductor manufacturing.

Key beneficiaries include:

  • TSMC Arizona: $6.6B in funding + $5B loans

  • Intel: Up to $7.86B

  • Micron: $6.17B

  • Samsung, GlobalFoundries, Texas Instruments, Amkor, Corning, and others

These incentives aim to rebuild America’s semiconductor and electronics ecosystem—from raw materials to chip fabrication.

But Trump has strongly criticized the CHIPS Act, calling it “horrible” during his 2025 State of the Union address, hinting at its possible repeal.

The Bottom Line

Despite political pressure, massive investments, and growing nationalistic rhetoric, the idea of a fully “Made in America” iPhone remains far from reality.

The roadblocks—cost disparities, skilled labor shortages, regulatory hurdles, and entrenched global supply chains—are not ones that can be dismantled overnight.

Unless the U.S. combines policy incentives, long-term infrastructure planning, and skill development at scale, Apple—and companies like it—will continue to rely on China and other international partners for years to come.

Why Every Salaried Person Must Do One Business in Parallel

In today’s fast-paced, unpredictable economic environment, depending solely on a single source of income—especially a salaried job—is becoming increasingly risky. While jobs offer security and a consistent paycheck, they can also limit financial freedom, personal growth, and long-term wealth creation. This is why more and more working professionals are exploring the idea of running a parallel business while continuing their 9-to-5.

Let’s dive into the top reasons why every salaried individual should consider starting a business on the side.

1. Create Multiple Streams of Income

The most powerful reason to start a side business is to diversify your income. A job offers a fixed salary, which may not grow fast enough to match rising living costs. A side business, however, can:

  • Provide a secondary income

  • Cover additional expenses

  • Be scaled over time into a full-time venture

Even a modest monthly income from a side business can significantly improve your financial resilience.

2. Job Security is No Longer Guaranteed

In a world of automation, layoffs, and global recessions, job security is becoming a myth. Even high-paying jobs in tech, finance, or consulting are not immune to market shocks.

A side business acts as a safety net. If your job is affected, you won’t be starting from scratch—you’ll already have something running that can support you during tough times.

3. Transform Passion into Profit

Many people are passionate about photography, baking, teaching, fitness, writing, or art—but don’t pursue these due to job commitments. A side business lets you:

  • Express yourself creatively

  • Do what you love outside the constraints of your job

  • Make money from your passion

Platforms like YouTube, Instagram, Etsy, and Skillshare make it easier than ever to monetize your interests.

4. Accelerate Wealth Creation

A salaried income is typically linear—it increases gradually with increments and promotions. In contrast, business income is exponential. When you scale your side business with the right strategies:

  • You can earn 2x–10x more than your salary

  • You can reinvest profits to build long-term wealth

  • You can retire earlier or achieve financial independence faster

Having both a salary and a business income can fast-track your savings, investments, and goals.

5. Learn New Skills and Mindsets

Running a business teaches you more than any job ever could. You learn:

  • Marketing and branding

  • Finance and budgeting

  • Customer service

  • Sales and negotiation

  • Problem-solving and innovation

These skills don’t just help in business—they make you a better employee, manager, and leader at your job too.

6. Leverage Tax Benefits

Salaried employees pay income tax with few deductions. Business owners, on the other hand, enjoy several tax-saving options. When you run a side business, you may be able to deduct:

  • Internet bills

  • Travel expenses

  • Office supplies

  • Software tools

  • Marketing costs

This helps reduce your overall tax liability and maximize your savings.

7. Gain Freedom Over Time

One of the biggest motivators for people to start a business is freedom:

  • Freedom to choose your clients

  • Freedom to work on your terms

  • Freedom to be your own boss

If your business grows successfully, you may eventually replace your job income and work full-time on your terms. You’ll no longer be limited by office hours, office politics, or mandatory commutes.

8. Future-Proof Your Career

Industries evolve rapidly. AI, automation, and remote work are transforming the job market. By starting a business, you stay relevant and adaptive.

You future-proof your career by:

  • Building your personal brand

  • Learning digital and entrepreneurial skills

  • Staying updated with market trends

Instead of relying on a single employer, you create your own professional identity.

9. Build a Legacy and Asset

A salaried job helps you pay bills. A business builds an asset. An asset can:

  • Be scaled

  • Be sold

  • Be automated

  • Be inherited by your children

This makes a business a long-term investment that lives beyond your working years. You’re not just trading time for money—you’re creating something with lasting value.

10. Boost Self-Confidence and Personal Growth

Starting a business—no matter how small—pushes you out of your comfort zone. You learn to:

  • Take risks

  • Handle failure

  • Make decisions

  • Stay accountable

This leads to immense personal growth and confidence, which reflects in your professional and personal life.

11. It’s Easier Than Ever to Start

Gone are the days when starting a business required huge capital, office space, or a team. Today, you can start with:

  • A laptop and an internet connection

  • Free tools like Canva, ChatGPT, Shopify, YouTube, etc.

  • Zero or low investment ideas like freelancing, consulting, content creation, reselling, or affiliate marketing

The barrier to entry is low, but the potential returns are high.

12. Unlock Global Opportunities

Your job may restrict you to a local office or city. A side business—especially online—lets you reach customers worldwide. You can:

  • Sell products on Amazon or Etsy

  • Offer digital services globally

  • Teach online through YouTube or your own platform

This opens up doors to a truly borderless income.

Conclusion

Starting a business while working a full-time job may seem overwhelming, but it’s one of the smartest moves you can make for your financial and personal growth. It prepares you for uncertainty, unlocks hidden potential, and gives you the freedom to live life on your terms.

You don’t have to quit your job today. Start small, stay consistent, and watch your side hustle grow into something meaningful and rewarding.
